Public Service Announcement – ProtonVPN now has settings for Tomato routers

ProtonVPN, as of Wednesday, July 12, 2017, now has settings for routers flashed with Tomato firmware.

Why is this a big deal? Because I didn’t have a DD-WRT router.  Previously, the only router configuration instructions available were for that one specific type.  My router was initially configured for use with VyprVPN, which requires the Tomato firmware.

VyprVPN is a fine company, except for the fact that it’s based out of Texas (though incorporated overseas). This means it can be compelled to give up customer information via fucked-up U.S. government policies. If Republican legislators continue to compromise customer privacy and force VPN providers to establish “back doors” (defeating the whole purpose of VPNs), then I’ll have ProtonVPN configured on my router (meaning they’ll get encrypted traffic subject to Swiss governmental legislation, which truly sides with the consumer).

I shouldn’t have to do any of this, but large companies siding with conservative and restrictive governments don’t give a shit about me.  It’s why I ditched Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, AOL, Yandex, Facebook, Twitter, and most social media.  It’s why I’ll never give out my real name (or any potential commenters’ names) in this space.  It’s why my ProtonMail is further protected by a Mailvelope browser extension.

Because fuck corporate greed and governmental spying.  VPNs are the new speakeasies and we have to endure this era of computer Prohibition until control freaks finally get the message and a life.
