Don’t get me wrong. I love technology. That’s why I have a tower PC … at home, in one location, locked in place.
But something that can follow me around, track my movements, and (1) be hacked for deeply personal information or (2) simply be misplaced and have the same available to random strangers? Yes, I’ve found cell phones in public bathrooms more than once. Those seems like perfect torture devices for my introverted ass (self-confessed INFP here).
Maybe extroverts and even ambiverts think of them as unprecedented opportunities to encounter even more people than they normally would. I guess for them it would be like bashing open a piñata full of electronic goodies. But the very idea makes my skin crawl.
I’m 50/50 on laptops, though. Maybe because I see those as a way to take your work, hobbies, and interests wherever you go, not necessarily share them. Tablets, cell phones, and wearable tech like Google Glass seem insidiously perfect for boundary violations.
Thoughts and feedback on this post are definitely welcome. I recognize everyone is different. If you like mobile technology, please explain why. If you don’t, give reasons why not. If you’re neutral or ambivalent, your feedback is welcome as well.
