Single people as a whole are treated like crap.  The idea is that everyone is supposed to be partnered, even people who are perfectly okay not being partnered.  Married people, in particular, are given artificial inducements and perks simply for being paired in the culturally approved fashion.

However, single women are treated worst of all, even amongst badly treated singles.  Misogyny is the short and most complete answer for that.
