Rape culture is unfortunately not a thing of the past.

Was Genie Francis’ continued presence on General Hospital a lurid reminder that they were pedaling the argument back in the ’80s that rape is romantic and can be the segue to love and marriage?

You don’t even have to go back that far.

50 Shades of Grey, anyone? The book, not the movie, although the movie has problematic content as well.

What have we got? Stalking, emotional abuse, and rape also being romanticized and also considered the segue to love and marriage … only 7 years ago. Not to mention denigration and misrepresentation of ethical BDSM.

Genie Francis’ continued presence on General Hospital may have been a lurid reminder that those arguments were being pedaled in the 1980s. Unfortunately, 21st century rape culture does that just fine right now.
