Religion as abuse? Unfortunately, so much is and so many are.

Other than teaching basic ethical precepts like the golden rule, is childhood religious indoctrination a form of child abuse?

My religious indoctrination was child abuse for namely two reasons:

  1. The religion I was forced to endure taught that [a] child abuse is normal, [b] it is to be expected, and [c] it’s the unquestioned “right” of parents.
  2. There was no option of rejecting the religious indoctrination.

So, religious indoctrination certainly can be a form of child abuse. But I would stop short of calling all religious instruction abuse. As long as the kid is on board with what’s being taught, as long as what’s being taught isn’t some form of abuse in itself or bigotry, and as long as kids can take it or leave it, I don’t have a problem with religious instruction.

The problem is so much of religious indoctrination is obedience, deference to authority, and some form of bigotry, on top of abuse.

So “religion” has some work to do.*
