Is romantic love nowadays egoistic?
Nowadays?
It’s the egotism of the moment one lives in to think “love” was better or worse in some bygone era.
There were just as many game players, manipulators, abusers, and all-around selfish people “back then” as there are now. Conversely, there were just as many genuinely good people, kind and warmhearted individuals, and all-around great human beings in love in the past as there are in the present.
Well, maybe not just as many, but if ratios could be measured I’m pretty sure they would be pretty consistent throughout the ages.
In my opinion, most romantic love/sexual desire has a healthy balance between passion and altruism. You want to feel good, but you also want to make your lover(s) feel equally good, as well.
I think romantic love is doing just fine, as it has previously and will into the future.
