Have we been desensitized to violence against women because of the #metoo movement?
Quite the opposite, actually.
Here’s the sequence of events, as experienced by me (a cisgender, heterosexual man who considers himself down for QUILTBAG rights, social justice, and feminism):
- #metoo started.
- Self-reports of enduring sexual harassment, molestation, abuse, and rape were initially made (mostly, but not exclusively, by women of color).
- The reports exponentially took off far in excess of what I expected, even though I knew it was bad.
- Even though the reports came streaming in, I still know this is a fraction of actual sexual harassment, molestation, abuse, and rape that actually occurs.
I am more sensitized to violence against women (and anyone that suffers violations of their emotional, mental, and bodily autonomy) because of #metoo.
Let’s relegate rape culture to the dustbin of history.
