Really, Catholics? Again?

Cardinal McCarrick has been defrocked by the Vatican for widespread sexual abuse. Why is it that these aberrant priests, bishops, and cardinals get punished by the church but not by law enforcement?

Well, Catholicism*, that’s why.

Wherever it’s the majority religion, and also closely embedded with local law enforcement, the political structure, and societal acceptance, it’s the perfect cover for sexually abusive Catholics.

Like, if I’m a molesting and/or rapist church leader, I pretty much know I can get away with all the abuse, molesting, and raping I want to commit if I keep it “in house.” I know my religious institution will do everything in its power to minimize it and cover it up should it come to light. My profession will add further cover by being considered the model for upright behavior.

And if defrocking is the best punishment Catholicism can hand out for offenses that warrant imprisonment, all the molesting and raping they say they’re dealing with will continue unabated.

* This can apply to any religion/institution. I’m just pointing out Catholicism because it’s the focus of the question.
